Foundations in Herbal Medicine - Summer 2005

This course blends theory and practical hands-on learning as well as scientific and traditional approaches to practicing herbal medicine. The topic areas to be addressed include:
- Basic field botany for herbalists
- Tools and processes for plant identification
- Ethical wild gathering and plant harvesting practices
- Materia medica of the local plants studied
- Ways of making herbal preparations
- Creating a herbarium for plant study
Students will develop a complete herbal pharmacy of botanical medicine made during the course and possess the knowledge for safe and effective usage of these preparations.

Study of Trees: Starting in the fall you will travel the journey of developing your own unique relationship with NS native Trees. This series of once a month workshops and self-study will identify the Trees, study the medicines and learn about arbortherapy. Foundations in Herbal Medicine - Winter 2005

Introduction to Herbal Medicine - Course Description:
This unit will review relevant therapeutic actions, group them according to their use with each of the human body systems studied, and compile a list of herbs that supply each action. Using a case study approach, these herbs and actions will be referenced in the development of herbal protocols for a range of common health conditions.
This process will be applied for each case to determine the appropriate use of herbs, individualised formulas with dosing information, and other suitable herbal preparations.
At the end of this unit, students will have gained knowledge and resources that enable them to develop effective herbal treatments for everyday health issues.
