Dr. Donovan will incorporate these teachings in a few examples of how to integrate the ‘spirit’ of medicine into case taking and prescribing. \nAfter graduating from St. Francis Xavier University\, Dr. Donovan completed a four-year medical degree at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. As part of her studies in Toronto\, she worked in a variety of health centres\, including the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic\, the Sherbourne Health Clinic\, and the Anishnawbe Native Healing Centre. \n\nDrawing Closer to the Herbs Around Us\nDuring this workshop\, participants will need to bring their own sketch book and drawing supplies\, as well as water bottle and appropriate outdoor clothing. We will spend time with plants that draw us into them\, and we in turn will draw them\, appreciating both their physical attributes\, and the energy they have. Suggested reading for those interested is “Zen Seeing\, Zen Drawing\,” by Frederick Franck. \nEmma Fitzgerald is a visual artist who moved to Nova Scotia in 2004. In recent years she has started to more formally study herbalism\, taking Savayda Jarone’s year-long herb course. However\, it was as a child that these ‘studies’ began\, often in the form of drawing plants found in the gardens\, woods and lane ways of Vancouver\, where she grew up. \n\nConversations about Plant Spirits\nBring your personal experience and stories to share\, and questions to ask about plant spirits. \nRita Baruss is a gardener\, shamanic practitioner\, yoga instructor\, writer\, artist and student of plant consciousness. \n\nHerb Walk with Local Herbalist\nMeet some local herbs with herbalist Kevin Carpenter. \nKevin has been involved with HANS for many years\, and served on the BOD this past year. He was the inspiration for this year’s herb fair location. He grew up very near the Monastery and has a unique relationship with the plants and the landscape of his home. \n\nWild Arising (Spirit to Spirit): a Sacred Hoop Awareness\nA shared experience of connecting to our plant helpers and how to incorporate them in our everyday lives… through spirit awareness. Along with the “sacred hoop” discussion\, of how the sacred tribes on Turtle Island honoured plant spirits\, and how important it is to create a relationship with the medicines we share life within Grandmother Earth\, beyond having our needs be met. A primitive skills\, wild food and permaculture enthusiast\, eager to connect back to her ancestral lineage\, the Dogtribe\, in so doing that she may share the knowledge with the children. \n\nGold\, Frankincense and Myrrh\, The Gifts of the Magic\nHistorical and Modern Uses of Sacred Tree Resins\nwith John Cummings \nA look at folkloric\, traditional\, religious and modern uses of sacred tree resins\, focusing primarily on Myrrh and Frankincense. \nJohn’s lifetime passion for trees and plants morphed into a passion for herbal medicine. He has since sought out connection\, education and mentoring from many sources. Interning at the UPS Botanical Sanctuary in Ohio opened many doors\, including an 8-month apprenticeship with Rosemary Gladstar at Sage Mountain\, VT. He currently is wrapping up a 2-yr clinical herbal therapeutics program with renowned Cherokee herbalist David Winston.
